Internships are available for editorial, marketing, programming and graphics positions on a part-time basis. To apply for an internship, please send a cover letter, resume and samples to Amber Zapffel, Seattle Publishing, 68 S. Washington Street, Seattle, WA 98104. Call 206-903-1333 for more information.

Intern Skills

The skills needed to succeed as an intern are enthusiasm, honesty, a positive attitude and a willingness to learn and accept challenges. Good written and oral communication skills are essential. Familiarity with the Macintosh operating system, using MS Word, email, web browsers, Filemaker Pro (for editorial interns), page layout software, Photoshop (graphics interns) and HTML (for programming interns) is a plus.

Commitment

The intern must be willing to commit for a period of time determined during acceptance of a position. Most often this averages around 18 hours per week for 10-12 weeks. If the intern is obtaining college credit, school requirements must be submitted before start date.

Compensation

Internships are volunteer positions. Each intern will receive professional training inside a publishing company, access to otherwise hard-to-get experience, academic support with reports and meetings as required for credit and the opportunity to fully "own" a published project — nothing is better for future job interviews than the ability to show and tell a committee about a project you've had published.

Editorial Intern

Our Editorial Internship introduces the intern to the publishing industry and editorial procedures. Our editor (to whom the intern will report) works with clients, sets the editorial theme, works with other staff members and freelancers, prepares mailings, researches, writes, proofreads, selects photographs and prepares files for production. The editorial intern participates in all aspects of the editorial process.

Graphics Intern

Our Graphics Internship introduces the intern to the publishing industry and its production procedures. Our production manager (to whom the intern will report) works with clients, designs the publications, works with other staff, works with freelancers and vendors, builds ads, builds specific graphics, scans photos, assembles pages, prepares finished pages for pre-press and manages the print run. The intern will be exposed through demonstration and participation in all aspects of the design and production process.

Marketing Internship

Our Marketing Internship introduces the intern to the publishing industry and our company’s marketing practices and procedures. Our president (to whom the intern will report) creates monthly journals, works with other staff members and freelancers, develops marketing strategies and then helps to implement them. The intern will be exposed through demonstration and participation to all aspects of the marketing process.

Programming Internship

Being a part of our programming department means working on the supporting systems of Bicycle Paper, making our production staff’s lives easier by automating as much of the pre-press workflow as possible, developing and maintaining our clients’—and our own—websites, and making our clients happy by building solid, easy publication systems. We’re looking for honest and enthusiastic developers who are eager to learn—and teach—new things. We expect an incoming intern will have a solid, not necessarily deep, understanding of both front-end and back-end web development; semantic (X)HTML, CSS, Javascript, Ruby on Rails and MySQL are the primary tools we choose to use. Being comfortable in a text editor is a must—you’ll get no Dreamweaver here! We work extensively in FileMaker databases, so experience there is plus; being open to learning FileMaker is a must.
